Community Outreach

Calvary’s Senior meal site provides lunch and more… Hot meals are served Monday through Friday at noon at Calvary Lutheran Church. More than just a meal, come to enjoy the fellowship and the many other social and recreational activities. Calvary is dedicated to the seniors in the Spencer community. The Sr. Citizens Meal site serves meals to any Senior 60 years or older for a fee of $2 or as they are able to give. If one cannot afford the meal, a meal is provided free of charge.

Rowan Helping Ministries A county-wide ecumenical agency which meets the needs of various citizens by putting God’s love in action. They need volunteers in many areas of ministry. Calvary has committed to provide dinner and assist with laundry and clean-up. In addition, we provide breakfast the following morning. Other service opportunities include donations of food (collected the first Sunday of each month by Calvary Witness Committee). To read more about Rowan Helping Ministries click here. WELCA is involved in outreach ministry. During the holidays they have provided meals for a needy family and “Christmas” for a single mother of five. Throughout 2008 WELCA encouraged the children of the congregation to contribute Pop Tops from cans to raise money for Ronald McDonald Houses. They also collected pennies to provide support for the children of women who are imprisioned. Currently they are collecting used cell phones so they can be refurbished and recycled by the Good Deed Foundation.

Summer Ministries Summer Ministries include Vacation Bible School and Family Outings for all ages. Each summer, Calvary Lutheran, along with Spencer Presbyterian and United Methodist Church of Spencer, jointly offer VBS for the children of Spencer. Children from the neighborhood look forward to this exciting event, and parents are able to enjoy a bit of a break while knowing that their children are being nurtured in the Word of Christ and cared for with the loving hands of volunteers from our churches.

Meals on Wheels Members of Calvary have been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. We are the “Church that Feeds the People; Mind, Body and Soul.” These two programs are good examples of how we are a church delivering God’s work by using our hands.

Spencer Council of Churches Calvary is actively involved with the Spencer Council of Churches. Six congregations from this community gather together for worship quarterly. This gathering provides the Christian community the opportunity to share our varying faith traditions in worship to the Triune God; Holy One, Holy Three. These worship services rotate and pastors swap pulpits for these occassions. During Holy Week we hold six services from Palm Sunday to Good Friday. Calvary traditionally hosts the Good Friday noontime Service. This year The Rev. Wyatt from Dorcett Chapel, UCC preached. This is a rich and meaningful way in that we, as the Ecumentical Christian community of Spencer are able to “Feed the Souls” of the entire community while serving the needy. Contributions are offered to Rowan Helping Ministries.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers–>Outreach Cyber Ministry Team Another powerful outreach mission we have recently started is having our Lay Eucharistic Ministers carry Holy Communion from the table to the homes of these who are unable to join us for worship. This outreach is an extension of our Outreach Cyber Ministry Team. The Cyber Ministry Team video’s every Sunday worship. These recordings are delivered to the infirmed, shut-ins, and local Nursing Homes. They are also distributed in the local post office and other businesses for people to view at their leisure. Again, through these efforts we have established outreach ministries that “Feed the People.”
